Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A greige rug with rows of flowering-tree motifs: each motif is a small tree or plant rising from a short stem, with a central blossom, leafy branches and a rounded crown of tiny leaves arching over it. The motifs are set in staggered rows across an open, plain ground, with half-motifs cut off at the edges as if the pattern continues beyond the rug.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in wool. The ground is soft and slightly variegated, which gives the open spaces between the motifs a calm, natural texture. There is no border. At 188×283cm this is a large rug for a living room or dining room.

Material: 100 percent wool pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan. Wool is naturally resilient and hard-wearing, and the pile is made for everyday use in living and dining rooms.

A soft, light ground like this shows dark spills more than a deep ground would, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

The motif repeated across this rug is the flowering tree, a classic image of growth and abundance found in textiles from Persia to India. Each one rises from a short stem into a central blossom, flanked by leafy branches and topped with an arching crown of small leaves, like a fountain or a peacock's tail. The trees are set in staggered rows with generous space between them, so the open ground is as much a part of the design as the motifs themselves. At the edges and ends, the motifs are cut off part-way, which makes the pattern feel like a length of fabric rather than a framed picture. There is no medallion and no border. The result is light, airy and easy to live with, and suits a calm living or dining room.
