This fine Persian Sabzevar is worked in the beloved ‘garden panel’ (khesti) design — a grid of compartments, each a little walled garden holding a flowering tree, cypress, vase or blossoming plant, together forming a Bagh-e Behesht or ‘Garden of Paradise’. Every panel glows in a different colour — red, indigo, green, gold and cream — framed by an ivory border alive with flowering vines, vases and birds. It is one of the most joyful of all Persian designs.

Sabzevar rugs, from the Khorasan region of north-east Persia, are prized for their fine knotting and hard-wearing highland wool. The dense pile only mellows and improves with age. Worked entirely by hand over many months, every compartment is drawn a little differently — the honest mark of a genuine one-of-a-kind, hand-made piece.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen, and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills.

Care instructions

Vacuum gently on low suction without a rotating brush, and avoid the fringes.
Use a rug pad underneath to cushion the pile and prevent slipping.
Rotate the rug occasionally so it wears and fades evenly.
Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in, and do not rub.
Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to protect the natural-dyed colours.
Use only a specialist hand-wash rug cleaner for any deep clean.

Sabzevar, in the Khorasan region of north-east Persia, weaves finely knotted rugs in the great classical Persian designs. This example follows the ‘garden panel’ or khesti design — a grid of compartments, each a little walled garden filled with a flowering tree, vase or blossoming plant, together forming a Bagh-e Behesht, a ‘Garden of Paradise’. Worked in glowing polychrome on an ivory ground and framed by an ivory border of flowering vines, vases and birds, it is a genuine one-of-a-kind — a joyful, characterful heirloom.
