Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A multicolour rug with an abstract, distressed design: broad horizontal bands of colour run across the width, broken up by irregular patches and speckles that look like layers of paint worn back to show the colours beneath. One end settles into a wide, calmer band, so the design moves from busy to quiet along the length.

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in wool and silk. The silk gives some areas a soft, light-catching sheen, while the wool areas stay matt and textured, which adds to the layered effect. There is no border; the pattern runs edge to edge. At 182×276cm this is a large rug for a living room or dining room.

Material: Wool and silk pile, hand-knotted in Afghanistan. The wool gives strength and texture, and the silk adds sheen to parts of the design.

Silk is more delicate than wool and can show pressure marks and changes of light more readily, and the pile looks lighter or darker depending on the direction it is brushed.

This is a contemporary design with no traditional motifs at all. Instead of flowers or medallions, the rug is built from broad horizontal bands of colour that blur and break into one another, scattered with irregular patches and fine speckles, like a wall where layers of paint have been worn back. The bands are uneven in width and the edges between them are soft, so the eye drifts across the surface rather than settling on one point. One end of the rug opens into a wide, quieter band that gives the busy design a place to rest. The mix of shiny silk and matt wool makes the surface change as you walk past it. It suits a modern living or dining room where the rug is meant to be the main piece of art on the floor.
