Rug material

Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A finely hand-knotted Nain from the desert-edge town of Nain in central Persia (Iran), woven in 100% wool. The ivory field carries a full Shah Abbasi arabesque of scrolling vines, palmettes and curled saz leaves, drawn throughout in the pale sky-blue linework that is the hallmark of Nain weaving, with cobalt, brown and small touches of green and wine red among the flowerheads.

A round radial medallion in cream and blue anchors the centre, framed by a scalloped cartouche outline, with pendant palmettes above and below. The cream main border carries blue flowerheads on a scrolling vine between fine rope-twist guard stripes, and the weaver's signature cartouche is woven into the lower border. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Care instructions

  • Vacuum gently and regularly on a low setting.
  • Rotate the rug every six months for even wear.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Have the rug professionally hand-cleaned every few years.

This is Nain doing what Nain is known for, and doing it very well. The field is worked edge to edge with a Shah Abbasi arabesque, yet the rug still reads as light and open — the trick is that the vines and leaf outlines are drawn in pale chalky blue rather than in strong colour, so the density never turns into weight. The medallion is set inside a scalloped cartouche rather than floating free, which is a slightly more formal treatment than usual and gives the centre a clear edge. Cobalt and brown appear only in the flowerheads, and the restraint is deliberate: it is the discipline of the palette, more than the fineness of the knot, that separates a good Nain from an ordinary one. Signed by the weaver in the lower border.
