A finely hand-woven kilim from Afghanistan, made in 100% hand-spun wool. A blush-apricot ground carries frame within frame of soumak embroidery — stylised tree and vase motifs, diamonds, zigzags and hooks in navy, burgundy, sage, coral, teal and ivory — with a densely banded centre panel at the heart of it.

The lower end finishes in a broad panel of navy and apricot stripes carrying rows of lozenges and interlace, closed by an ivory fringe. Being a flatweave it is thin, light and reversible. A one-of-a-kind piece.

Material: 100 percent hand-spun wool, flat-woven with soumak embroidered banding. No pile.

Care instructions

  • Always use a rug pad underneath — a flatweave slips easily without one.
  • Vacuum gently with the beater bar off, working along the bands rather than across them.
  • Turn the kilim over every year — it is reversible and wears evenly if used both sides.
  • Blot spills immediately, working from the outside in. Pale grounds mark more readily than dark ones.
  • Have the kilim professionally cleaned when needed — never machine wash.

Look closely at the wider bands and the same motif keeps returning: a small vase with a pair of curling handles, worked in navy, burgundy or teal against the blush ground. It is one of the oldest devices in the region's weaving, a vessel holding stylised flowers, and it survives here reduced almost to a symbol — recognisable but no longer literal. Around it the rug builds outward in ring after ring of soumak embroidery, finer towards the centre and bolder at the edges. The pale apricot ground is unusual for a piece this densely worked, and it is what keeps all that pattern from turning heavy: the colours have somewhere to breathe.

Returns We accept returns within 7 days of delivery. Items must be unused and in their original condition. To start a return, contact our customer support. For returns due to personal preference such as size, colour, or a change of mind, return shipping is paid by the customer.
