Only one available — one-of-a-kind.

A near-black navy field covered edge to edge with a fine scrolling arabesque in cream, tan and pale blue — palmettes, curled leaves and small blossoms, with no medallion anywhere. A wide ivory main border of flowering vine frames it, and between the two run narrow salmon guard bands, the one warm note in an otherwise cool palette. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. On a dark ground the drawing is what you see and the field reads as the space between it, which is the opposite of an ivory-ground Nain where the ground dominates and the drawing sits on top. Combined with the absence of a medallion, that gives the rug no single focal point at all — unusual in fine Persian weaving, and the reason it reads as an even, quiet surface rather than a composition with a subject. At 203×256cm this is a room-sized rug for a sitting room or under a dining table, and a dark ground is the practical choice for a space that gets real use.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends.

The dark ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt. The wide ivory border runs along all four edges where a rug is walked past and will show scuffing sooner than the field. A fine pile crushes under furniture legs, so use a rug pad.

This rug has no focal point, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. There is no medallion, so nothing draws the eye to the centre; and the ground is near-black, so the field is not something you look at but the space the drawing sits in. Put those together and what remains is an even surface with a rhythm running through it — closer in effect to a textile than to a picture. It is the opposite arrangement from an ivory-ground Nain, where the pale field dominates and the design reads as marks placed on it. A practical consequence follows: a rug with a centre has a right place in a room and looks wrong pushed off it, while this one can sit anywhere and be cropped by furniture without losing anything. Note the narrow salmon guard bands between field and border. They are the only warm colour on the rug, and in a palette this cool a few millimetres of them does a great deal of work.
