Rather than a single centre, several large star-shaped medallions — each a burst of gold petals around a red-and-ivory heart — sit among pendant motifs and a dense web of floral tracery. The dark field makes the gold blaze, giving the whole rug a jewelled, ceremonial richness.
A broad ivory-and-gold border of bold palmettes and scrolling vines frames the field, accented with garnet red and touches of navy and sage. Gold is unmistakably the keynote — it crowns every medallion and fills the border — while the black ground gives the design depth and drama, and the red and green details bring the flowers to life up close.
Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with the tight double knot, the rug shows the dense knotting and elaborate, controlled drawing of a genuinely fine weave.
