A gabbeh in the true tribal sense: no border, no medallion, no repeating pattern — just a long green panel running almost the whole length of a terracotta red field, tapering slightly as it goes, with rows of small hooked motifs standing along either side of it like a line of plants. At the far end the hooks gather into a short row of stems; at the near end they trail off into open ground. Everything is drawn freehand in the weaving rather than copied from a cartoon, which is why no two hooks are quite alike and the panel edges waver.

Hand-knotted in Ghazni wool, a highland Afghan fleece with a high lanolin content that gives the surface its sheen. Both the red and the green carry strong abrash — wide horizontal banding where one dye lot gives way to the next — and on a design this plain that banding is most of what you look at. At 90×286cm this is a true runner for a corridor, a landing or a long kitchen. A mid-toned red ground is practical in a busy space; it hides everyday marks far better than a pale rug would.

100% Ghazni wool, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and the lanolin in a highland fleece like this one gives it a degree of natural resistance to soiling.

The abrash banding across both the red and the green is a feature of hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool. It will not wash out or even up over time, and on a plain field it is the most visible thing about the rug — worth being certain you like it before buying. A runner takes concentrated traffic down its centre line, so use a rug pad and rotate it end for end regularly.

This is what separates a gabbeh from every other knotted rug: there is no cartoon. A workshop rug is woven from a squared paper drawing that fixes each knot in advance, which is why its motifs are identical and its borders turn cleanly at the corners. A gabbeh is composed at the loom by the weaver, and the evidence is everywhere here — the hooks along the panel differ in size and lean, the spacing between them opens and closes, and the edges of the green panel drift by a knot or two as they climb. The taper is the clearest sign of all: the panel is wider at one end than the other, not by design but because the drawing was carried in the weaver's head over nearly three metres. Read the abrash as part of the same story. On a plain field the wide horizontal bands where one dye lot met the next become the pattern, and a gabbeh weaver will place them rather than hide them.
