A cream gold field carrying a lobed medallion in gold, sage and red, with a cusped pendant above and below it and sage green spandrels closing the field corners. Scrolling vines, palmettes and blossoms in sage, gold, coral and grey-blue spread across the ground. A broad brick red border of palmettes and leafy scrolls frames the field, backed on both sides by pale gold guards, so the red sits as a band between two cream zones. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool with silk. The red is placed as a ring rather than at the centre or at the outer edge: measured outward from the middle of the rug, it holds around one in twenty of the surface across the field, rises above one in five through the border band, then falls away again to the outermost edge. At 61×94cm this is a small mat, suited to a bedside, an entrance or a wall hanging.

Hand-knotted from wool with silk, with a natural fringe at both ends. The silk carries the fine floral drawing across the field, holding an edge on palmettes only a few millimetres across, and gives the cream ground the soft sheen that shifts as you move around the rug.

Wool and silk shrink at different rates, so this rug must never be washed, steamed or shampooed — any deep clean is a job for a specialist in mixed-fibre rugs. The cream field is the vulnerable part: it is the palest thing here, it makes up most of the surface, and the outermost band is cream too, so the rug has no dark edge to take the worst of the wear.

The strongest colour on this rug is not at its centre. Measure the red outward from the middle and it stays low across the whole field — around four to six per cent of the surface — then climbs sharply to more than twenty per cent through the border band, and drops back below three per cent again at the outermost edge. The red is a ring, with cream on both sides of it.

That placement does something specific to a small rug. A red centre would pull the eye inward and make the mat read smaller than it is; a red outer edge would draw a hard line around it and do the same. Setting the strong colour in a band and flanking it with pale gold on both sides means the rug has no hard boundary — the outer guard fades into the room rather than stopping at it — while the ring still frames the field and holds the design together. It is the reason a mat two feet across does not feel cramped. Look at the very outer edge and you will find it is the same cream as the centre; the red never reaches it.
