Warm Ivory Plain Round, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% Ghazni wool, hand-knotted, with a fine fringe following the full circumference. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and the lanolin in a highland fleece gives it a degree of natural resistance to soiling.

A plain pale field is the least forgiving surface a rug can have. Footmarks, vacuum tracks, furniture-leg crushing and any spill will all show, and the abrash banding is a feature of hand-spun wool rather than a fault — it will not even out. A round rug also needs a round pad or one cut to shape; a rectangular pad will show as ridges under the edges.

A loom is rectangular. Warps run straight from one beam to the other, and a weaver builds a rug row by row across their full width — which is why the overwhelming majority of hand-knotted rugs are rectangles. To make a circle the weaver has to shorten each row progressively as the shape narrows towards top and bottom, judging the curve by eye a few knots at a time, and there is no way to correct it afterwards. Look along the edge: a true circle holds an even curve the whole way round, and any miscounted row shows as a flattened section. This one also has nothing to hide behind. On a patterned rug the design distracts from small irregularities in shape and knotting alike; on a plain field, and a pale one, every one of them is visible. What you get in return is the wool itself — the abrash banding across the surface is the record of the dye lots the weaver worked through, and on a rug like this it is the entire composition.
