Warm Gold and Espresso Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A warm gold ground sits at the paler end of the range and is less forgiving than a red or dark rug, though with half the field covered in drawing a mark has a good deal to hide behind. The cream inside the güls is the colour that will grey first.

There are two motifs in this field and they have been given separate colours. The octagonal güls are quartered and packed with coral — it appears in every one of them, in the same places, and it appears nowhere else in the field. The small stepped stars that stand at each intersection between the güls are drawn strictly in dark brown and cream, with no coral at all. Neither motif borrows from the other.

The effect is two rhythms running across one surface. The coral marks out the gül grid, warm and regular; the brown stars mark out the offset grid between, neutral and slightly denser. Follow either one across the rug and you can hold it separately from the other, which is why a field this closely packed — half of it covered in drawing — does not turn into a single texture. Keeping a colour to one motif and withholding it from its neighbour is a small discipline, and it has to be maintained across every emblem on the rug for the effect to hold.
