A strong saffron ground hides everyday marks reasonably well. The cream and pale celadon in the shrubs are the vulnerable colours — they are the palest things on the rug and they carry the drawing. Because the palette runs so wide, uneven fading will show as a shift in the balance between colours rather than as a general softening.

The repeat here is a plant rather than a geometric emblem. Each motif is a low tufted shrub with a pair of curved leaves opening outward and a slender flowering stem rising from the centre, and every one is drawn in three or four colours at once — celadon, pale teal, cream and lime, with a crimson chevron at the heart. They are set in staggered rows, so a line drawn across the rug never passes through two shrubs at the same height.

What makes the rug unusual is how many colours it runs at once. Measured across the whole surface, six separate colour families each hold three per cent or more, and the saffron ground — much the largest single presence — still accounts for under half. Most rugs of this size work with a ground and two accents; this one uses the ground plus five. It is why the field reads as busy and cheerful from a distance and still gives you something new to find at close range: no two shrubs are coloured in quite the same order.
