Red and Orange Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A bright red ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have and hides everyday marks well. The cream inside the güls and border stars is the vulnerable colour — it is the palest thing here and the first to grey, and it sits down the centre line where a small rug takes its traffic.

The light colour inside these güls is worth looking at properly. On most Bokharas it is an apricot or a salmon — a softened, slightly dusty warm tone that sits gently against the madder ground. Here it is a true orange, saturated and clean, closer to tangerine than to apricot, and it does something quite different: instead of easing away from the red it pushes further along the same direction, so the two colours reinforce each other rather than settling one against the other.

The result is a rug with almost no tonal relief at all. Measured across the whole surface, barely one per cent of it is cooler than neutral — there is no blue, no green, nothing to cool the eye. The only breaks are the cream and the black, and both are neutral rather than cool. That is a deliberate and quite bold choice on a piece this small: a rug like this will warm a room noticeably rather than sit quietly in it, and it wants a cool floor or a pale wall to work against rather than more warm colour around it.
