Peach Scattered Cross Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

With five sixths of the field left plain, this rug is less forgiving than a densely patterned one — there is very little drawing to break up a mark, and a warm peach ground sits at the paler end of the range. The dense borders will hold up and hide wear far better than the open centre.

This rug is made from almost nothing. Measured across the entire surface, ninety-nine per cent of it falls into two colour families — the warm peach of the ground and the dark of the drawing — with everything else, including the pale sage inside each cross, adding up to the last one per cent. Across the field itself only about sixteen per cent carries any ornament at all. Five sixths of it is plain wool.

Reducing a rug this far is a decision, not an economy. The Bokhara family it belongs to normally fills its field edge to edge with güls, and the borders here show that the weaver could have: they are dense, multi-banded and worked with octagonal güls and star rosettes at full complexity. The field was left open on purpose, and the small crosses were sized and spaced to keep it that way. What you get is a rug that functions as a warm plain floor from a distance and only resolves into pattern close up — useful in a room that already has a lot going on, and unusually calm for a design of this ancestry.
