A ground this deep is among the most forgiving a rug can have for marks and everyday soiling, with one exception: dark rugs show lint, pet hair and pale fibres more clearly than any other colour. The gold and cream in the vine are the vulnerable colours, and they matter more here than they would on a pale rug — they are the only thing making the drawing visible.

This is an unusually dark rug, and the numbers say how dark. Measured across the whole surface, two-thirds of it sits below a third of full brightness — the oxblood ground and the near-black border between them — and under one tenth is genuinely light. The median brightness of the entire piece is about 39 on a scale to 255. Most rugs of this design are woven on a clear red or ivory ground; this one has been taken several steps down.

Working that dark changes what the small amount of light has to do. The gold stems and the cream blossoms make up a thin fraction of the surface, but because everything around them is deep, they carry the entire drawing — the arching vine is legible only because it is lighter than what it crosses, not because it is a different colour. It is the same principle as a chalk drawing on a blackboard. The practical upshot is a rug that is very forgiving underfoot and reads as quiet and old from across a room, while the design only opens up when you are close enough to follow a stem.
