Navy and Red Caucasian Medallion Rug, Hand-Knotted Sherwan

100% hand-spun Afghan wool, naturally rich in lanolin, which gives it softness, a subtle sheen and a natural resistance to everyday dirt and spills. Hand-knotted in northern Afghanistan with a cream fringe at both ends.

A deep navy ground and a red border are both forgiving of everyday marks. The cream and gold in the medallion and border rosettes are the vulnerable colours — they are the palest things here and the first to grey, and on a rug this densely bordered they cover a good deal of the surface.

This is a small rug carrying a full-sized design, and the measurements show what that costs. The navy field — the part most people would call the rug — accounts for only about seventeen per cent of the surface. Measured outward from the centre it holds the middle quarter and then stops; everything beyond is border, five distinct bands of it, running all the way to the selvedge.

Nothing has been left out to make the scheme fit. The serrated medallion is there with its star centre, the flanking hooked devices are there, the paired birds are there, and the red border carries its full complement of rosettes in cusped cartouches. On a large Caucasian rug that same arrangement would leave a generous open field; at 52 centimetres wide it leaves a panel not much bigger than a hand. The result reads as unusually concentrated — a lot of design in very little space — and it is why a mat this size still has the presence of a proper rug rather than looking like a sample.
