A madder red field carrying five columns of Turkmen güls in wheat gold, cream and espresso, each a rounded octagon quartered into blocks of colour. Between every group of four sits a smaller cross-shaped motif — the minor gül, a second emblem that alternates with the main one and is easy to walk past without noticing. The framing runs deep, with several narrow guard bands of stars and dogtooth and a broad end panel of stepped tribal forms. Cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The madder red ground is the traditional colour for this weave and reads deeper and browner than the brighter commercial reds. At 200×259cm this is a room-sized rug suited to a sitting room or under a dining table. A dark red ground is practical for a space that gets real use, hiding everyday marks far better than a pale rug would, though it will show lint and pale fibres.

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, and a room-sized rug spreads wear over a large area rather than concentrating it.

The dark madder ground hides everyday marks well but shows lint and pale fibres more than it shows dirt. Use a rug pad, particularly under furniture legs.

Most people looking at a Bokhara see one motif repeated. There are two. The large quartered octagon is the major gül, and between every group of four sits a smaller cross-shaped form — the minor gül — which alternates with it across the whole field. In classical Turkmen weaving the pairing was meaningful: the major gül identified the tribe, while the minor gül varied and could indicate a sub-group or a particular workshop. Once you have seen it the field reads differently, as two interlocking grids rather than one row of medallions, and it explains why the spacing between the large güls looks generous but never empty. Note the ground colour too. Madder is the root dye that gives this weave its traditional red, deeper and browner than the brighter commercial reds, and it is the colour the design was drawn for — the gold and cream of the güls are calibrated against it.
