An ivory field carrying a radiating star medallion in navy, rose and gold, set among dense scrolling arabesque with palmettes and small blossoms. Deep navy spandrels fill the corners, and a wide brick-red main border of flowering vine frames the whole, closed by ivory and navy guard bands. Woven into the outer band at one end is a cartouche reading Irān, Esfahān, Sirafian, in cream script on red with a small Iranian tricolour beside it.

Hand-knotted in wool at a very fine gauge, fully curvilinear throughout. At 149×238cm this is a smaller Isfahan than most — useful in a study, a bedroom or beside a bed, where a full room rug would be too much. The scale of the drawing has not been reduced to match: the arabesque and the medallion rings are worked at the same fineness as on a large piece, which means proportionally more knots per motif and a design that repays looking at closely.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends, signed by the Sirafian workshop of Isfahan.

A small rug concentrates its wear rather than spreading it, so a rug pad and regular rotation matter more here than on a room-sized piece. Take particular care of the signature cartouche at the end — it sits close to the fringe, where wear concentrates, and it is the part of the rug that cannot be replaced.

The cartouche in the outer band at one end reads Irān, Esfahān, Sirafian, with a woven Iranian tricolour beside it. Look for it along the narrow band just above the fringe. What is worth understanding about a small signed rug is that the drawing has not been simplified to suit the size. A workshop reducing a design for a smaller loom has two options: draw the same motifs smaller, which requires a finer knot and more work per square metre, or reduce the number of motifs and let each one sit larger. This rug takes the first route — the arabesque, the medallion rings and the border vine are all at full fineness, so a piece under two and a half metres long carries as much drawing as a room-sized rug. That is why small Isfahans are not cheap in proportion to their size, and why they reward being looked at from close range rather than across a room.
