An ivory field carrying five medallions rather than one: a small star medallion at the exact centre in green and blue, with four much larger rosette medallions set around it, one to each quarter. Scrolling arabesque, palmettes and small boteh forms fill the ground between them. A wide sandy-beige border of compartmented floral panels frames the whole, with several narrow guard bands and cream fringe at both ends.

Hand-knotted in wool. The palette runs to ivory, sandy beige, wine, pale blue and green, held to the restricted Nain range. At 199×234cm this is a wide, near-square room rug — an unusual proportion worth measuring for, since it will sit differently from a standard rectangle. The ivory ground is elegant but will show traffic more readily than a dark rug would.

This is a fine, hand-knotted piece that rewards a little extra care. 100% wool pile with a natural fringe at both ends.

The ivory ground will show traffic and spills more readily than a dark rug would. A fine pile also crushes under furniture legs more easily than a coarse one, so a rug pad matters here.

The unusual thing here is that the central medallion is the smallest one on the rug. Four large rosette medallions sit around it, one to each quarter of the field, and they are perhaps twice its size. That inverts the normal hierarchy, where the centre is the largest and everything else defers to it, and it changes how the eye moves: instead of settling in the middle it circles the four outer medallions and returns to the small green star at the centre last, as a point of rest rather than a starting place. The layout also suits the shape. This rug is nearly square, and a single dominant medallion on a near-square field tends to look stranded — four satellites spread the weight into the corners and hold the proportions together. Look among the arabesque for boteh, the teardrop form with a bent tip that became the paisley of European textiles; there are several worked into the lower field.
