Honey Gold and Espresso Jaldar Diamond Medallion, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

A honey gold ground sits at the warmer, paler end of the range and is less forgiving than a red or dark rug — the open gold at the centre has little pattern to disguise a mark, and it is also the part most likely to be walked on. The densely worked borders will hold up better and hide wear far longer.

Measure how much of this rug is drawing rather than ground, and take the measurement outward from the centre, and a clear structure appears. Around the medallions the field runs at about a third covered — mostly open gold with small diamonds and crosses scattered through it. By the inner border it has risen to around seventy per cent. At the outermost band it reaches ninety-six: almost no ground shows at all.

Building a rug this way gives it a gravitational pull inward. The eye is held at the edges by density and released into the open gold at the centre, which is why a small rug with a very wide border does not feel closed in — the middle stays airy no matter how much work is going on around it. The progression is not perfectly smooth either: two pale guard bands interrupt it on the way out, dropping the density briefly before it climbs again, which is what stops the borders reading as one thick mass. Run a finger from the centre to the edge and you cross five distinct changes of pace.
