A gold ground is mid-toned rather than pale, so it hides everyday marks better than a cream rug would, though not as well as a dark one. Yellow dyes are among the least light-fast of any colour, so keep this rug well away from a sunny window — the field is the part at risk, not just the accents. Take particular care of the cartouche at the end, which sits close to the fringe where wear concentrates.

A gold ground is the most difficult colour a workshop can choose, and the reason is a problem of value rather than taste. Most of the motifs in a Persian floral vocabulary are drawn in cream, pale blue and light gold, and all of those sit close to a gold field in brightness; put them straight onto it and the design dissolves. Look at how this rug solves it. Almost every element is outlined in navy or wine red — follow any palmette and you will find a dark line closing it completely — so the separation comes from line rather than from tone, and the field stays luminous instead of muddy. The same logic explains the crimson border: a light border would have left the whole rug in one value band, while the dark red gives the eye an edge to stop at. There is an inscribed cartouche in the outer band at one end, flanked by narrow green and cream bars, which marks this as workshop weaving by a named hand; the inscription is best read with the rug in front of you and good light.
