Dusty Blue and Rose Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

A mid-toned blue-grey ground sits between the extremes — it hides everyday marks better than a pale rug but not as well as a dark one. Because the field and the gül interiors are one continuous colour, any mark or crushed patch reads across a much larger uninterrupted area than it would on a rug with filled güls, so a rug pad matters more here than usual.

On almost every Bokhara the gül is a filled shape: it sits on the ground as a block of colour, and the contrast between that block and the field is what makes the column of emblems read from across a room. This rug does it the other way. The güls here have no fill at all — the wool inside each octagon is the same dusty blue-grey as the open field beside it. Measured, the difference between the two is a single point on one channel, which is to say there is no difference; it is one continuous ground with octagons drawn onto it.

Everything therefore rests on the outline. Each gül is defined by a band of dusty rose and near-black perhaps a centimetre wide, and by the stepped cross-medallion at its centre — and that is the entire emblem. It is a demanding way to work, because an outline has nowhere to hide: a filled gül forgives a wandering edge since the block of colour still reads, whereas here a few knots out of line would show as a kink in the only line there is. Run your eye down the column and check how true the weaver has kept them over nearly three metres.
