Deep Crimson Turkmen Gül Bokhara, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A deep crimson ground is among the most forgiving colours a rug can have, and with the field about half covered in pattern there is little open ground for a mark to show against — a practical rug for a busy room. The cream is the colour that will grey first, and it is what separates one gül from the next.

Look inside one of the güls. Where this emblem is normally quartered — divided by a cross into four compartments, each filled with its own hooked device — here the interior has been reduced to a single cream oval lying on its side, and every gül on the rug carries the same one. Nothing else. It is the simplest treatment of the motif you are likely to see.

That simplification is what lets the rest of the design work as hard as it does. Measured, ninety-eight per cent of the whole rug falls into just two colour families, and yet the field is about half covered in drawing — güls in staggered rows with small radiating stars filling every gap between them. A quartered gül at this density and this palette would turn into noise; an emptied one stays legible, so the weaver could pack them tighter and add the stars as well. It is a trade made deliberately: detail given up inside each emblem, and spent instead on how many of them the field can hold.
