Butter Gold and Warm Grey French Floral Panel, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. At this size the rug is light enough to lift and shake out, which is the easiest way to keep it clean.

The palette is pale throughout — gold, warm grey, cream and soft coral — so this rug is less forgiving than a red or dark one, with little tonal contrast to disguise a mark. The grey centre panel is the most exposed area: it is a large plain expanse, and on a mat this size it sits where a foot lands.

This rug is built from two colours that swap places twice. Measure the grey outward from the centre and it traces a clear U: about a quarter of the surface at the middle, where it forms the cusped panel; down to under three per cent a third of the way out, where the gold field takes over completely; then up again to two-thirds at the outer edge, where the border is grey once more. The gold occupies only the ring between.

Bookending a rug like this does something specific to a small piece. The centre panel and the border are the same colour, so the eye connects them across the gold and reads the whole thing as one object rather than as a series of frames. Most rugs work the opposite way, giving every zone its own colour so the layers stack outward. Here the gold is the interruption rather than the ground — a bright band holding two grey areas apart — which is why a mat two feet across still reads as having a proper centre rather than being all border.
