Blush Camel and Sage Alternating Lattice, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A blush camel ground sits at the paler, warmer end and is less forgiving than a red or dark rug. The signature in the outer band is the one part of this rug that cannot be replaced, and on a rug this size the outer border is where chair legs and foot traffic tend to land — worth a thought when deciding which way round it goes in the room.

This rug is signed, and it is signed in an unusually modest way. Most woven signatures sit in a cartouche — a framed panel set into the border, designed to be found. This one has no frame at all. A few words of Arabic script are knotted straight onto the plain camel of the outer band, close to one corner, at the same small scale as the guard stripes around them. Unless you are looking for it you will walk past it.

The rest of the rug is equally restrained. Measured across the whole surface, ninety-three per cent of it sits within one orange-gold range — the blush field, the terracotta borders, the camel outer bands are all the same colour at different depths. The sage green devices in the field and the small touches of pale blue make up almost all of the remainder, and they are what the eye actually reads: on a ground this uniform, a modest amount of cool colour does a great deal of work. Between the two you have a rug that says very little at a glance and rewards you for going closer — the signature included.
