Azure Blue and Cream Jaldar Diamond Gül, Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

100% wool pile, hand-knotted, with a natural fringe at both ends. Wool is resilient and forgiving underfoot, which matters on a room rug of this size that will carry furniture as well as traffic.

A mid-toned blue ground is reasonably practical — better than ivory, not as forgiving as a deep red. The cream and gold in the güls are the vulnerable colours, and on a cool ground any yellowing from soiling shows more readily than it would against a warm field.

The Bokhara and Jaldar weaves are red rugs, overwhelmingly. Where they are not red they are camel, ivory or a soft salmon — the emblem is the constant and the ground colour barely moves. A clear blue field like this one is rare in the tradition, and it is not a timid blue either: measured, it sits at around two-thirds of full saturation and well up the brightness scale, which puts it far from the dusty and slate blues that occasionally turn up in these weaves.

Changing the ground changes what the emblem does. On red, a cream gül reads as warm on warm and the whole rug settles into one temperature. Here the cream and gold of the güls sit against a cool ground, so every motif has an edge of contrast that a red-ground version would not give it, and the rug reads brighter and more graphic than its design alone would suggest. It also behaves differently in a room — a red Bokhara warms a space, while this one cools it, and it will sit with greys and blues that a traditional red would fight.
